I went back and flipped through this book and found a quote that makes sense of why this book was mentioned here:
We are at risk of discarding Jesus’ ways and adopting the world’s ways when we are given a job to do or a mission to accomplish… Getting things done is something that the world is very good at doing… But, following Jesus is radically different from following anyone else… The ways and means of the world “work,” sometimes magnificently, in achieving grand conceived ends. Wars are fought and won, wealth is accumulated, elections are won, victories posted… In the process a lot of people are killed, people are impoverished, marriages destroyed, children abandoned, congregations defrauded… We need to develop discernments that say an unapologetic “no” to ways that violate the gospel of Jesus.
I don't want to speak for Peterson, but from some other things that I've read of his, I would assume that he is not anti-culture, but rather believes we are to counter the culture - not merely hiding from the culture but still living in culture. To me, this means engaging with different methods and means, while keeping the "ways of Jesus" at the forefront, as the lens by which all else is judged.
For instance, the Bible doesn't tell us how to change the oil in our cars, but it does provide a framework for the purpose of everything we do being to the glory of God. So, the way of Jesus would mean taking care of the gift God has given us (like a car) - which I'm sure most of us need to repent of right now as we're reading this.

I can't believe we actually pulled last night off! We had 175 people packed around round tables, 125 laptops going at once, multiple wifi networks and everything went flawless. I want to thank a couple of people for all of their work:
Courtney: the master-mind of the project and the primary servant
Rob Davis & Graham Bennett: they had the building ready to go and the wifi networks running
Amy Cochran & Kyle McKay: they took Courtney's manual and made it into an amazing booklet
Hannah Wickline: volunteered all day Monday to organize the admin end of the night
My hope is that you will continue to research your gifts and learn to use them as we redeem our city. Let me know if you have any questions.

| i agree. last night was great! joe and i got there late and couldn't find parking. i was grumpy b/c of the rain, but joe said, "this is awesome." thanks for putting this together. i hope people begin to see that god can and does give us gifts to his glory. |

agreed. Great job putting it all together! Thanks to all those who were able to help this church be enlightened of their gifts.
Now let us pray that we begin the journey of using our gifts as one body to love our city. |

I thought the whole night was a success! Great job to everyone. I want to echo the comments made about taking this info with a grain of salt. While I think a lot of my assessments were accurate, I too have taken this sort of thing before and it always mirrors where I am in my life that day and not necessarily who I will be in 5 years.
I have some issues with the way some of the questions are phrased and I always have this problem when forced to choose between 2 concepts I would not otherwise consider, but I suppose that is for another day.
Some of us at our table wanted to switch laptops and take the test for each other! I think we might have more honest answers that way

I once did a test that way. It was interesting. First you took the test, then all your buddies scored you on the test, and then you talked about why you'd scored someone in each way.
However, the logistical challenges were pretty immense. |
