I had been on staff with a ministry for several years and as a young man, I was close to BURNING-OUT. I was pouring into people and yet found myself empty. If I had continued on the same path, I would be swinging on tire in my backyard counting stars in the middle of the day. When I started to think about my condition, I realized my problem was not a time issue, it was not a "I need a break" issue, it was not the fault of the ministry I was serving--I had a theology problem.
The answer came in the form of a seminary class. I never saw this coming. Actually, I was concerned that if I took a Systematic Theology class that I may become more of a Pharisee and less of a lover of Jesus. With great reluctance, I got on a jet and flew to the class. Over the next 2 weeks, I sat in lectures for 8 hours a day and to my great surprise, I was radically transformed by the gospel/by Jesus.
I believe you have this same opportunity over the month of June. An amazing professor is giving his time to teach us theology. Please SIGN-UP and go: go with friends, go as a couple, take your children, go as a home group--JUST PLEASE GO. Here are the details:
Dr. John Hammett from Southeastern Baptist Seminary in Wake Forest coming to Vintage21 to teach a theology class. This is a great opportunity for you to deepen your understanding of your relationship with God. This is a great primer on theology – A brief overview of doctrine, with the imparting of “tools” to study more in depth the doctrine that is introduced.
Join us every Monday starting June 9th-30th at 7pm for an hour and a half. Here are the topics that Dr. Hammett will be teaching on:
June 9: Theology: What? Why? How?
This would be an introduction to the whole field of theology, why it matters for a Christ-follower, and how we go about it.
June 16: Who Is God?
We would touch on God’s nature (Transcendent-Immanent-Triune), attributes (infinite-holy-love), and works (creation-providence).
June 23: Who Are We?
We would describes humans as created, created male and female, created in God’s image, created to work, created with a complex constitution, created for community, and no longer as originally created (fallen).
June 30: God’s Great Purpose
Here we would look at salvation holistically, from election to justification, to sanctification, to glorification.
To register email journeyclasses@vintage21.com and let us know if you need childcare. We hope and pray you would make the committment to join us in this class _________________ Pastor Tyler |

Thanks for this insight, Tyler. The concern of burn-out hits very close to home for me and I've in recent months become aware and convicted of my own theology problem. Transformation is the key and a necessity.
This theology class is a great step in that direction. |
